The Shack by William P. Young

Last Wednesday we were given a book that is possibly one of the most influential books I have read. The Shack

It is written by William P. Young, a Canadian who was raised among a stone-age tribe by his missionary parents in the highlands of what was New Guinea. He now lives in the Pacific Northwest.

It’s a story about a man, Mack, who was raised by an abusive alcoholic father, until he finally ran away from home. Later, Mack marries and becomes a father himself. On a family camping outing, on the last day of the trip, his youngest daughter, Missy, is kidnapped and murdered.

Obviously this changes Mack’s life in many ways, and what he calls ‘The Great Sadness’ becomes an ever present way of life. One day he receives a mysterious note inviting him back to the shack where Missy’s bloodied dress had been found and has an amazing experience with God.

That synopsis doesn’t even begin to bring justice to the story. It is an amazing story about freedom, life, relationship, control, religion, expectancy and, most of all, love. It is a story that throws a complete curve ball into everything traditional religion has taught us to believe, and can change your entire perspective of God if you can open your mind enough to let it.

One quote by Eugene Peterson of ‘The Message’ states:

“This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress did for his. It’s that good!”

  1. Thanks for the review, Vic. It sounds like a really great book and I’ll have to add it to my “wish list” to give to my kids for the big holiday coming up. If I’m lucky -and they each have a little financial windfall -I can really expand my home library!

  2. Heading to town today, will look to see if local library has it.

I love when people recommend books. Sometimes I get lucky in my selections, but other times, it’s not the case.

  3. Forget waiting for someone to give it to you, or hoping to find it in the library — this is a book you will want to experience over and over…! It will enable you to read the Bible in a new light, to even experience God in a fresh new way. Do not wait to get and read this book — devour it. Repeatedly. Then, you too, will become among the multitudes to purchase cases of them to give to everyone you know. What other fiction book have you ever heard of that managed to sell over 20,000 copies, by word of mouth, before it ever got to a publisher…? Think about that. Don’t be left out of what God is wanting to say to the world through this book..!

  4. I read the book and thought it was very good at protraying God as loving and full of grace like God says He is in the Bible. The problem is , is that most people don’t perceive God that way because of the Old Testament. However, I felt the author contradicted himself and what he was trying to accomplish by have God invite Mack to a car accident. If God is truely loving like the author wants us to believe, he defeated his purpose by putting him in a car accident. God wouldn’t do that. The book would have been better without it.
